haircare products

One of the most common mistakes people make when it comes to hair is the products being used. It’s super important to read the ingredients list on your shampoos, conditioners, sprays, etc. because believe it or not you may be doing more harm than good.

Getting products that are good for the integrity of your hair don’t have to come with a hefty price tag. Not only will you be saving money in the long run, your hair will also be much more managable (less expensive in the chair too!)

It wasn’t until I met my good friend, Amanda, that I actually started caring about my hair. I’m a natural yellow blonde and I was occasionally box dying my hair brown and black. I was also using shampoos and conditioners that contained wax. Gee – no wonder my hair was so shiny! Once I switched to better hair products my hair results were out of this world.

Everyone who knows me knows that I LOOOOOOVE Amika products. You can find them in Sephora, your local stylist (always recommend supporting a small business FIRST), or even Amazon!

I shared this post (pictured left) back in December because overall they are my true favorites.

+ Wella FusionPlex Shampoo/Conditioner – will run you about $40 for those big bottles (pictured left) or you can get them on Amazon!

+ Amika Bust Your Brass Purple Shampoo – by far my favorite purple shampoo (and I’ve tried a lot). Not only is the smell PHENOMENAL but it doesn’t dry out my hair!

+ GHD Pro Platinum Plus Straightener – I’ve had this straightener for over 3 years and it’s my favorite I’ve ever purchased. I did splurge – but it was well worth it. Heats up in 30 seconds!

+ DryBar Detox Dry Shampoo – a must must must. I bought this on a whim one day in Ulta in 2019 and I’ve been using it ever since. The “Coastal Cooler” is my favorite, but the limited time “Grapefruit Mimosa” is a dream!

I recently bit the bullet and bought some L’ange Hair products – and I’m in love! Their products are cruelty free and free of toxic chemicals and dyes.

+ the Le Volume Volumizing Brush Dryer is perfect if you’re like me and HATTTEEEE drying your hair. I dried my hair in under 10 minutes…seriously…a game changer. It comes in 2 sizes, 75mm and 60mm. If you’ve got hair that is shoulder blade and shorter, grab the 60mm!

+ I love a good Sea Salt Texture Spray! I tend to have very thin, flat, boring hair and this product is a great one to add!

+ If you’re using a hair dryer, straightener, curling iron, etc. you need this Revival Heat Shield. It’s botanically infused and perfect for keeping the integrity of your hair!

+ the Mangé Marula Oil Hydrating Mist is a great finisher for your hair. Packed with antioxidants and UV Protectants, this product is great for nourishing dry & damaged hair (I use every time after I use a hot tool).
***TIP: DON’T SPRAY GENEROUSLY! You only need 2-3 sprays!!!

+ the hairbrush is so amazing. I love it for distributing dry shampoo on my scalp or a root booster!

+ skipped a washing? this deja vu dry shampoo is amazing! not powdery at all!!

+ If you hate using both a curling iron and a straightener – or just simply need to declutter you should check out the Le Duo Air Styler. It’s titanium plated and it makes curling/straightening easy. It also has adjustable temperatures perfect for fine or thick hair!

+ everyone needs a detangling comb in their life. I love this brush for brushing through curls without ruining the texture. they also sell it in a wide comb and in a travel size!

better hair tips

+ stop buying discount versions of the name brands from T.J. Maxx/Marshalls etc. These products often don’t match the actual brand and I’ve seen them even contain different ingredients. READ YOUR LABELS!

+ using hot tools? whether it be one time a week or 7, heat protectants are important. I always use a heat protectant and a moisturizing spray after EVERY encounter with a hot tool.

+ bleaching your hair dries it out – and so does purple shampoo. be careful after treatments and consult your stylist for the best ways of keeping your hair happy and healthy.

The Chinese Evergreen is the perfect plant for your patio or sunroom. Being on the top 10 list of houseplants for cleaning the air – the chinese evergreen is great for increased productivity! Everyone should have this plant in their home as it is a sign of good luck!

Peace Lily

Peace Lilies can be grown both indoors and outdoors (outdoor plants can reach up to 6 ft. tall!!!). They are great for mold/mildew prevention as well as cleaning the air!   They’re not pet friendly, and can cause stomach irritation if ingested, so be sure to place somewhere where your animals won’t eat them!

Surfing and Plants Moodboard Instagram Post (5)

NAME YOUR PLANTS!!!

The key to keeping plants alive (besides watering of course) is to name them! In naming your plant, you’re creating an almost personal relationship with your plants. How are you going to forget to water your plant Frank?!

Surfing and Plants Moodboard Instagram Post (6)

Dumb Cane

Scientific NameDiffenbachia
Requirements: moderate light, moist soil – but not overwatered

With a name coming from the temporary speechlessness that occurs when ingested! Like the Peace Lily, Dumb cane contains calcium oxalate which is harmful if ingested.

Get to know your plants!

First plant syndrome? Head on over to the dollar store and grab a little notebook! Keeping a notebook with your plants’ information will be a lifesaver! Think of it as a pocket reference book made by you! Write down any notes such as soil changes, different placements throughout your home as well as notes on how the specific plant grew, watering schedule, etc.

Stop being afraid of killing another plant! Get one of these!

Essential Oils for the Skin

A great built-in benefit of essential oils is that they are skin boosters. Given that they’re derived from the  plants, seeds, and/or leaves of plants, they provide a natural way to treat skin conditions.

Lavender

While Lavender is most commonly known for sleep and calming properties, Lavender also provides a great balance for your skin! Packed with natural anti-inflammatory and natural hydrators, Lavender is a great for battling puffy, dry skin!

Blue Tansy

Known as the holy grail of essential oils – Blue Tansy is a rare plant from the Chamomile family! It is great for combating acne, skin aging, and blemishes.

Frankincense

I use frankincense DAILY! Straight from the bottle with a roller fitment or dilute with fractionated coconut oil  – Frankincense has been a game changer in my skincare routine.

Rosemary

Like Lavender, Rosemary is also a great anti-inflammatory essential oil. Can also help with greasy hair or dandruff!

Tea Tree

Harvested from the Maleluca tree, Tea Tree is of the most common and most used antiseptics in alternative medicine. Not only does it help inflammation, more importantly it helps with fighting bacteria (cue the acne breakouts).

Lemon

You hear me talking about Lemon for everything – and yet here it is again on the skincare list! Lemon is awesome for anti-aging and battling inflammation.

***DISCLAIMER: Beware – pure lemon can damage the skin when exposed to sunlight, when using in your skincare routine it’s best to apply at night or on days the UV index is low!

Patchouli

Finally, a skincare essential oil that combats pain relief! Great for eczema rashes and inflammation – Patchouli’s got you covered!

Eucalyptus

Like Patchouli, Eucalyptus is a great essential oil for rashes/inflammation.

Rose

Loaded with anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties, Rose is one of my favorite skincare essential oils.

Elemi

Helps with the appearance of the skin. Reduces dark spots.

Geranium

How to Develop a New Habit (and keep it!)

You heard that right! What a better way to start out the year, than with a new habit! Whether this be a new diet, a new financial goal (our checking accounts could use some cushion after we sat on our tush’s and online shopped in 2020), or something silly like planning when you’re going to wash your hair – I’ve got some tips to aid your success.

60-day trial

I know – everyone says try something consistently for 30 days, but nope, I’m telling you 60.

It only takes 30 days to develop the habit, but it takes 60 to keep it. When something is a habit, it’s like second-nature. The way you play with your hair when you’re in crowds or the way you yell at cars in parking lots, both habits. Just because you write out the monthly calendar on the dry erase board doesn’t mean you’ll keep up with it all month, right?

So make sticky notes and scatter them throughout your bedroom or house, or set an alarm reminder on your phone for 60 days.

"our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising everytime we fall"

Confucious

Fit it into your daily routine.

Whether you’re implementing a new routine for supplements or working towards financial freedom, be sure to implement some form of your new habit into your day. This could include not going to Starbucks or Dunkin for coffee, but instead making it at home.

Set reachable goals.

Don’t set yourself up for failure. Sure, you’re going to fail from time – to – time, but it doesn’t need to consume you. By setting reachable goals you’re more likely to succeed far beyond your goal. I’m not saying set the bar low (make sure it’s still a “challenge”), but I’m also not saying you’re going to become a millionaire in a few short months.

Stay consistent.

Keep with it! You set your goal for a reason, not being consistent will only lead to failure. Hold yourself accountable here!

Try it with a friend.

Did you know that you’re more likely to achieve something if you’ve got others by your side? Back when I worked at a local gym we saw greater fitness success from those who exercised with a friend. Your friend may want to be better about taking supplements too, sent a text or a snapchat daily as a reminder or push!

Flashback to July 2020 – parts of the world were starting to open back up (thanks COVID-19) but things were still not back up and running normally. I was sleeping until noon, not really starting my day until 2 PM, and I was suuuuuper unproductive. One thing I really wanted to work on (right then and there) was a schedule. I wanted to wake up no later than 9 AM to start my day around 10 AM. Seems like a reasonable “adult” thing to do, right?

Flash forward to September 2020 – I’ve been setting daily alarms and have been consistent with waking up before 9 AM. It’s day 58 of 60 and I’m awake before the alarm.

Now, January 2021 and I can honestly say that sleeping past 10:30 is a CHALLENGE for me.

I plan on implementing the 60-day trial method on all of my “New Years Resolutions”. Drinking my Ningxia Red & taking my vitamins everyday will be a breeze! Now it’s your turn to turn a wanted habit into a part of your daily routine!

Essential Oil blends for Sleep

Before essential oils I was one of those people that was constantly waking up in the night. I would maybe get 2-3 hours of sleep at a time before I would randomly wake up. Most nights I spent staring at the ceiling trying to even fall asleep. Helllloooo insomnia.

listen to your body.

If you suffer from anxiety, you may often find that sleep is hard to come by. Lack of sleep leads to an increase in production of stress hormones. What are “stress hormones”? They’re the hormones that increase blood pressure, heart rates, and blood sugars. When you don’t get enough sleep you’re basically stressing yourself out MORE!

I was sleeping like total crap when COVID-19 hit. I was looking for ways I could help myself without having to risk myself or my family members going to the doctor (for my sleep). Being a huge skeptic – I gave essential oils a try. And let me tell you – they changed my life.

the beginning

I started with a premium starter kit because it offered a variety of different things:

+ skincare support
+ mental health support
+ sleep support
+ and not to mention the ability to use them to clean my household and create a scent of my choice whenever I want that doesn’t contain any toxic chemicals

any essential oiler is going to tell you that the second you buy a starter kit or essential oils you should diffuse Lavender.

night one: i filled up my diffuser and gave it a try. i was SHOOK when I woke up the next morning, feeling fantastic!

thinking it was all in my head I tried it again the following night and was surprised when I woke up the following morning again (two nights in a row!!!!!!) just to my alarm feeling great!
